TRAGEDY has struck Hastings Football Club, with its reserves captain Scott Haggerty killed in a car accident on Saturday night.

Hastings president Kevin Miles said Haggerty was a popular figure at the club and his death had shocked all.

"He was very popular among the boys and was certainly a goer on the footy field," he said.

Miles said Hastings players spent Sunday supporting each other and trying to come to terms with the news.

"The players are all struggling a bit at the moment," he said.

"The footy club expresses our sympathy to Scott's parents."

Meanwhile, Hastings' committee tonight (Monday) is expected to vote to apply to the MPNFL to switch from Peninsula to Nepean league next season.

Miles said the club met on Sunday morning to discuss its direction and it was decided it would be better off changing leagues.

"We feel that we are probably just out of our depth, I suppose," Miles said.

"The top five teams seem to be getting further ahead of everybody. And with our thirds battling every week we probably need to move to Nepean division and rebuild from there."

Miles said Hastings would benefit from playing against nearby rivals Crib Point, Somerville and Tyabb.

"We need to get the whole club going again and it would be easier rebuilding from Nepean than it would be from Peninsula," he said.

Hastings on Saturday suffered its heaviest defeat of the season, losing to Mt Eliza by 137 points at Madsen Reserve.
