MPNFL tackles our appalling road toll

Of the MPNFL’s six municipalities, four are in the Top 7 for Road Deaths in Victoria with the City of Casey unfortunately at Number One. In response to these terrible statistics the MPNFL has joined forces with the TAC, RACV, Roadsafe and the Road Safety Officers from the City of Casey, City of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula Shire to create the MPNFL Road safety Program.

The MPNFL’s Road Safety Program is being designed by a steering group of the above organizations with the long term objective being forthe MPNFL football and netball community, particularly our clubs and players, to become community leaders and positive role models with regard toroad safety.

Through the program the MPNFL community will be provided with the information and knowledge to firstly make good road safety decisions and which in turn will enable them to influence the behavior of their peers and social groups focusing on increasing awareness of the need forpositive decision making with regard to road usage and highlighting the risks and consequences of making poor decisions both on and off the road.

nThe MPNFL’s Road Safety program is being designed to be sustainable and to continue indefinitely and is being developed in stages. The first stage is the delivery of two outstanding programs into each MPNFL club:
1. RACV’s free2go program which is a forty minute program aimed at Under 18’s which introduces information that first time drivers need to know such as how to buy a car, register it and all the positive things about getting a license and car for the first time. Every 18 or under attendee will receive a free 12 month RACV membership.
2. The second program is Looking After Our Mates is a one hour presentation by RoadSafe which is an outstanding program that talks about acting responsibly with regards to drinking alcohol and driving, riding or operating machinery. The program will discuss strategies such as not engaging in drink driving, providing an overview on statistics involving drink driving, advise about the effects of alcohol on the body, all about responsible drinking and includes interactive activities which demonstrates the effect of alcohol in certain situations.

The Programs have been designed to run easily, one after the other, on a training night with the Under 18’s (19 and 20 years olds) attending the RACV’s free2go presentation and then the rest of the club joining them for the Looking After our Mates session.

Our terrible road toll has a huge effect, directly and indirectly on our clubs, players and the MPNFL as a whole so it is with great pride that the MPNFL invite allclubs to participate in this program. Although it is compulsory for all clubs to schedule these sessions prior to the end of the 2008 season it isour ability to make a real difference in our communities that will be ourdriving motivation.

Ideally, presentations would be made to each Casey Cardinia and Nepean Football and Netball together with the Under 20 girls joining the free2go sessions and the senior netballers joining the Looking After Our Mates presentation.

Your Road Safety sessions have been scheduled for 2009 – See above
